Storefront Improvement Program Grant Awardees Announced. Kodiak Economic Development Corporation (KEDC), in partnership with the Kodiak Area Native Association (KANA), and the City of Kodiak, developed the Storefront Improvement Program (SIP) to help continue to revitalize Kodiak’s Downtown by creating a matching grant program for Downtown businesses.The program was announced September 2023 with applications accepted through the first week of December.

Since first moving to Kodiak in 2012, I have been inspired by our community and have actively sought opportunities to assist in the betterment of our shared island experience. I believe the skills that I honed as a leader on the teams planning for the Coast Guard’s homeport expansion and housing development will help me in being an invaluable board member, especially as we explore affordable housing and workforce development opportunities to ensure our community’s continued success. I am excited about the prospect of collaborating with fellow board members to shape a future where our children can live in a thriving future Kodiak.”

The Alaska Department of Labor & Workforce Development released the December 2023 issue of Alaska Economic Trends which takes a comprehensive look at the growing aquaculture industry in Alaska.

October’s statewide job count was up by 6,500, or 2.1 percent, from October 2022. Health care added 1,400 jobs, with the strongest growth in hospitals. Leisure and hospitality was up by 1,000 jobs over the year, with most growth in restaurants and bars. Professional and business services added 700 jobs, and the transportation, warehousing and utilities sector and mining (which includes oil and gas) both added 600.

KMXT invited KEDC to discuss the Storefront Improvement Program on Talk of The Rock. During the informative conversation topics ranging from the SIP matching grant program to Community Land Trust, Workforce Development, Career Expo 2024, and the Coast Guard Expansion were part of the interview.

With a Coast Guard expansion set to happen over the course of the next three years, Kodiak will welcome a possible addition of up to 1,000 new residents to the island. Currently there are approximately 2500 active duty and dependents stationed in Kodiak.
