USCG Base Kodiak

Typical Kodiak weather envelops 2 USCG ships at port in Kodiak, Alaska. The silver bay is flat and calm surrounding the two cutters.

The U.S. Coast Guard is a source of significant jobs and stability, and a footprint of more than 23,000 acres, which accounts for it being ranked the largest of all bases. In 2007, Kodiak was designated as a "Coast Guard City" because of the community's close ties to the largest U.S. Coast Guard base in the country. On Kodiak, Coast Guard presence is trending up and expected to continue as new ships are planned to homeport at Base Kodiak.

With a Coast Guard expansion set to happen over the course of the next three years, Kodiak will welcome a possible addition of up to 1,000 new residents to the island. Currently there are approximately 2500 active duty and dependents stationed in Kodiak.

This exciting addition to the Coast Guard will also inject additional talent into the workforce and enrich Kodiak’s people resources. Preparation for this expansion is necessary on the CG Base as well as for the community of Kodiak, and so KEDC has plans to host Coast Guard Expansion Roundtable Discussions, the first being mid-November 2023 with a representative from Foraker to facilitate.

Kodiak can continue its strong record of attracting Coast Guard infrastructure and personnel by investing in support of schools, affordable housing, jobs for dependents, and recreation opportunities. These are among the topics to consider during the CG expansion discussions.
